College football is prbably the best time of the year. Some may argue that CFB fails to compare to the NFL, but in terms of betting on games, CFB is easy money. Generally betting the over is safe, due to lack of a great defense in college football. But sometimes betting the underdog, especially when at home, is a smart play. With that said, here are my 5 bets to place this weekend if you want to make some money. I use MyBookie.ag, so those are the lines I will use.
1. Friday: 8:30 PM CST, Boston College/Northern Illinois, Pick: BC -3.5
NIU has a decent defense but is still struggling to find a QB. BC has a strong defense and is returning 7 starters with something to prove after a 7-6 record last year. BC was the 7th best rushing defense last year. They should be able to stop the NIU ground attack, and easily cover the spread.
2. Saturday: 11 AM CST, Michigan State/Bowling Green, Pick: Over 56.5
Michigan State had a terrible 3-9 season last year and needs to get off to a hot start. There is 0 chance that MSU is going to let Bowling Green have any advantages. The key will be in how well the MSU O-line has improved in the offseason. BGSU has an uptempo offense that likes to move the ball and a defense that gives up a lot of yards. This game should be a shootout.
3. Saturday: 11:20 AM CST, UNC/California, Pick: Cal +11
Both teams are in rebuilding mode after losing two great QB’s in Mitch Trubisky and Davis Webb to the NFL. Cal has a new coach and UNC has a very young team. Cal’s offense is going to be pass heavy, and UNC was dead last in interceptions last year. Cal has a strong defense with a lot of experience and UNC has a very new offense. UNC is at home and Cal is flying cross country to play this game. The spread is too large to not take the underdog in this one.
4. Saturday: 11 AM CST, #23 Texas/Maryland, Pick: Over 56
Texas has a new coach and the Longhorns have a lot to prove. Win big and keep the crowd excited, this team will go a long way in the match up against the Terrapins. Maryland has experience but has a QB controversy brewing. This should a very, very good game to open the CFB season. If Texas brings out with the same high scoring offense Tom Herman had at University of Houston last year, expect the over to be met early.
5. Saturday: 2:30 PM CST, #11 Michigan/#17 Florida, Pick:
Florida +3.5 New Pick: Michigan -5 There is a lot of confusion in Florida’s QB situation and there are a lot of Florida players suspended. Michigan is inexperienced and lost a lot of players to the draft. These are good teams still so expect them to adjust well. This game may not be a highest scoring game and could go either way. Furthermore, the game could be won on a field goal. Safe pick is a Florida with a +3.5.
About a tenth of the Florida team is suspended for this game. Michigan -5 is a lock.
Bonus Heisman Pick: Will Grier, QB, West Virginia 100-1
Now is always a great time to pick the Heisman winner. At this time last year, Lamar Jackson opened with 100/1 odds. That means a 10 dollar bet would have won you 1000 dollars. Best odds right now are Penn State RB Saquan Barkley at 15-1 and Penn State QB Trace McSorley & Alabama RB Bo Scarbrough at 20-1 each. But Will Grier at 100-1 odds is a solid choice. Throwing 10 bucks at Grier can net you a thousand dollars. Not a bad bet to place for a full season of excitement. Remember, before his suspension from Florida, Grier led the Gators to a 6-0 record in 2015, including a blowout 38-10 win against #3 Ole Miss where he had 271 yards and 4 TD’s.
